Start date jun 14, 2017; I pulled the starter and found that a piece of the housing that covers the starting gear had broken off and jammed against the flywheel. I was able to break it loose with a screwdriver and fish it out with my fingers.

I installed a new starter on my old simplicity lawn 4108 tractor. (the peice that the solinoid actually moves. The starter is still good and it will turn the engine over and bendix looks fine.

I see from some other posts on this site that the solenoid is the usual suspect. Batteries can show 12 volts, and still not have the amps to turn it over. Seemed to get worse over the past year.

I would appreciate any suggestions. The mechanism to engage the flywheel is faulty, probably the solenoid that activates it is either faulty (it moves its internal parts to make contact and so the motor spins, but it is not pulling the engaging mechanism at all) starter spins but doesn't engage. The new one does the same thing. So, in response to the trouble i replaced the battery, then the solenoid and finally the stater. What this means is that the pinion gear on the starter is clashing with the ring gear on the flywheel.

If the drive (bendix) isn't extending, when you try to start it, first, jump it with a known good battery, since yours may be weak. That starter had been installed almost 5 years, but i wouldn't have expected. I checked the switch with an ohm meter and it checks good.
